Summary:

'A dog knot becoming stuck is a problem is unique to dogs. A dog'smode of reproduction and reproduction anatomy iscomparatively unique to other animals and humans, which is why dogspossess a different physiology as well. The normal process of mating indog couples has different stages, of which the last stage is called“tying” or 'knotting'. This tying results from a swelling of theventral part of thevascular bulb on a dog's penis, generally called the “dog penis knot”.

A dog knot tying is a normal occurrence and may persist for 2 – 30minutes. If the dog knot is tied for a longer period of time it isreferred to as the dog knot being stuck. In such cases, both partnersmay experience severe injuries and bruises, which may leave a dog withsecondary complications in later stages of the problem.

Overview: Act of Breeding and Tying

Once a male and female dogare convinced that they are suited for each other, a female becomescalm and allows the male dog to mount the female. The dog penis remainssemi erect or the erection is practically non existent. The bone on thedorsal side of the canine penis makes the penis appear erect andfacilitates copulation.

Thenormal posture of mounting is described as the male stepping forwardand placing both fore legs on either side of the rib cage of thefemale. The male steps forward with its hind limbs and positions itsprepuce (fold of skin that covers the penis) behind the proximity ofthe female's vulva. At same time, the female elevates its hind quarterand front quarter of her tips downward. The act of breeding or matinginitiates with the entry of the sensitive glans penis. The male holdsthe female tightly with the fore limbs, just below the hind limbs ofthe female. The intro-mission continues with thrusting and the femalemight experience discomfort, particularly in cases where she is underage or is experiencing any health problem in the reproductive tract.

A Dog KnotStuck Problem Occurs When Tying Lasts More Than 45 to 60 Minutes

In the normal act of breeding, tying is a normalphenomenon, in which the bulbis glandis or “knot” at the ventral sideof penis swells in the vagina due to the high blood supply it contains. At the same time, the muscular band of the vagina, “ConstrictorVestibuli Muscles” constricts and during thrusting both get tiedtogether. This physiological character of dogs is thought to happen inorder to allow for the complete ejaculation of sperm into thereproductive tract of the female. After tying, the male brings one ofhis fore legs over the female and stands beside her, with the genitalorgans still copulated. One of the two swings and they come into aposition where they are facing the opposite direction of each other. This state of union continues till the ejaculation is completed indifferent stages.

Stuck To Dogs Knot Tying

The first portion of canine ejaculation is semen, which is usually 0.5 cc in volume, which is produced by the prostategland and takes half a minute to complete. This dog ejaculation isfollowed in a second stage by thick and white sperm rich semenejaculated in 1 cc volume and takes a couple of minutes to completelyejaculate. The third and final fraction of semen is produced by theprostate gland and is usually measured as more than an ounce of thinfluid, which takes 6 – 45 minutes to complete ejaculation, dependingupon the age, breed and size of the dog.

Knot tying is anormal process during the act of mating and may persist for 10 – 30minutes before both male and female are set free. But, in some cases,it may happen that the knot may get stuck and cause pain, injury, trauma and stress for both male and female. Dog knot becoming stuck is unusualand can be affected by existing pathological conditions (healthproblems) and any abnormalities in parts of the canine reproductivesystem.

Symptoms

A Dog penis knot which isstuck is an abnormality in a normal act of dog breeding. It isgenerally indicated in cases where the tying persists after 45 – 60minutes of copulation. Symptoms of discomfort, torsion (twisting), pain, blood discharge and aggression in both the male and female surelyrepresents a serious dog knot stuck problem requiring a veterinarian'sattention. Complications from injuries on and in the reproductivetract, high blood loss, self injury due to discomfort and secondaryinfections are common due to a stuck dog knot.

Management and Treatment

A stuck dog knot usually occurs due to anatomical defects in the reproductivetract of either male, female or both dogs. Females, when at a youngerage, may more commonly experience the condition, therefore immaturefemales should never be preferred for breeding. Similarly, male dogswith health problems related to hypertension and the cardiovascularsystem may more often experience a dog knot problem due to prolongedswelling of the knot or bulbus on the ventral side of the penis.

Somebreeds and middle aged dogs may have characteristics such as aprolonged ejaculation of the third fraction of semen, therefore tyingmay persist for more than an hour. During this, both male and femalemay feel discomfort due to the long duration and pretend to beexperiencing a dog knot stuck. Such cases of dog knot stuck usuallyresolve on their own.

Thenormal act of breeding involves excessive thrusting, pressure, swingingof the body and a fair amount of action and changes in posture. Suddenswinging of the body, pressurized thrusting and an abnormal change inposture may cause torsion twisting) in and/or injury to the caninepenis, leaving the couple with a dog knot stuck, which cannot beresolved on its own and which may require minor to major medical andsurgical attention.

Precautions

Some normal acts of dog breeding mayappear to be a stuck dog knot problem, which is why any reproductionissue should be carefully examined. Sometimes blood discharge thatoccurs during copulation may be misunderstood, but mostly these bloodfractions are shed by the female reproductive tract, which is a normalmechanism. Similarly, cases of dog knot stuck should be attended to bya veterinarian for proper handling. Forceful pulling apart the male andfemale or throwing water on the female or both during copulation canlead to a dog knot stuck problem and serious complications. However, anowner should only interfere or call a veterinarian if the time of tieis extended well above the norm.

Both male and female should be checked after theact of mating for any injuries and complications that affect thereproductive organs. Minor injuries and bruises are normal over thefemale vulva and the male penis may become inflamed and sore for a fewhours after copulation due to intense tying. Other symptoms, except theminor inflammations and bruising described should be immediatelyreported to a veterinarian and proper treatment/management should be carried out.

Dog reproduction is a complex process that usually begins with the courtship. Both male and female emit signals to let the other know they are prepared for mating and consequent copulation. Once they have finished mating, we can observe that the male dismounts the female but the penis is inside of the vagina, with both dogs still together. It is at this point when we wonder why this happens and if we should separate them or, on the contrary, they do it naturally.

In this AnimalWised article we will respond to these and more questions, solving the cause that explains why dogs get stuck when mating, read on!

The reproductive system of the male dog

In order to understand why dogs get stuck when mating more easily, it is essential to do a brief review of the anatomy of the reproductive system of the male and the female. Thus, the dog's internal and external apparatus consists of the following parts:

  • Scrotum: the scrotal sac is responsible for protecting and maintaining a proper temperature in the dog's testicles. It is also the visible part of the male canine reproductive system.
  • Testicles: located within the scrotum, their function is to produce both sperm and male hormones such as testosterone. They have an ovulate shape, are located in a horizontal position and they tend to be symmetrical.
  • Epididymides: located on both testicles, they are the tubes responsible for storing and transporting sperm to the vas deferens. These tubes are composed of a head, body and tail.
  • Vas deferens: it starts at the tail of the epididymis and has the function of transporting the sperm into the prostate.
  • Prostate: this gland surrounds the neck of the bladder and the beginning of the urethra. Its size varies from breed to breed. Its function is to generate a substance called prostate fluid or seminal plasma for easy transportation of spermatozoa. it also nourishes them.
  • Urethra: this conduit not only transports urine from the dog's bladder, but is also part of the canine reproductive system transporting sperm and prostatic fluid for final ejaculation.
  • Foreskin(prepuce):this is the fold of skin covering the penis to protect and lubricate it. The second function of the foreskin is its ability to produce a liquid called smegma, which is greenish, for this purpose.
  • Penis: in its unaroused state it is in the inside of the foreskin. When the dog feels excited, he begins the erection and, consequently, the appearance of the penis is outwards. It consists of the penile bone, which allows penetration, and the penile bulb, a ventral groove which allows the so called ‘knotting’.

As it is the case with the male genitals, the female dog's reproductive system consists of internal and external organs. It is the shape of these organs which lead to dogs getting stuck together after mating. Therefore we will briefly explain the function of each of part:

  • Ovaries: with an oval form, they have a similar function as the testicles in males. They produce ovules and female hormones such as estrogen. As with the male prostate, the size of the ovaries may vary depending on the breed.
  • Oviducts: these tubes in each of the ovaries have the function of moving move the egg to the uterine horn.
  • Uterine Horn: two tubes that carry the eggs to the body of the uterus if they have been fertilized by the sperm.
  • Uterus: it is here where the nidation (implanting of an embryo) of the zygotes takes place to become embryos, fetuses and, subsequently, puppies.
  • Vagina: not to be confused with the vulva, the vagina is the internal organ and the vulva the external. In the dog, it lies between the neck of the uterus and the vaginal vestibule, being the place in which the intercourse takes place.
  • Vaginal vestibule: located between the vagina and the vulva, it allows penetration during mating.
  • Clitoris: as with human females, the function of this organ is to produce pleasure or sexual stimulation to the dog. in turn this helps to encourage fertilization.
  • Vulva: as we stated above, it is the dog's external sex organ, and is changes size during the mating period.

What causes dogs getting stuck together after mating?

Once penetration has been produced, the male tends to ‘dismount’ the female, but stays attached. The dog will likely turn around to face the opposite direction, but getting stuck means they can't go anywhere. This leads the guardians of both animals to wonder why the dogs have been stuck after mating and how to separate them. This happens because the dog's ejaculation occurs in three phases:

  1. Urethral phase: this takes place during the beginning of the penetration, and therein the dog first ejects a liquid free of sperm. Penetration does not occur due to an engorded penis, but the baculum, also known as the penis bone.
  2. Sperm phase: after the first ejaculation, the animal completes engorgement and starts a second ejaculation, this time with sperm. During this process, there is an increase in penile bulb size due to venous compression of the penis and consequent blood concentration. At this point, the male turns around and dismounts the female, leaving the dogs stuck.
  3. Prostatic phase: while the male has already removed the penis from the female, copulation has not ended, as once the dog has turned away, the so-called ‘knotting’ occurs. This is also known as the copulation tie. The penile bulb remains engorged in the vagina. The expulsion of the third ejaculation has a much lower number of sperm than the last. Once the bulb relaxes and recovers its normal state, the dogs are unstuck.

In total, the intercourse can last between 20 to 60 minutes, 30 being the usual average.

This way, once the three phases of the ejaculation of the male have been reviewed, we see how the copulation tie gives us the answer to the question why dogs get stuck when mating. The expansion of the penile bulb locks the male into the female. The size it becomes means it cannot pass through the vaginal vestibule, which closes precisely to ensure this fact and avoid damage to the female.

Should I break two dogs stuck together during mating?

If you have understood the above reason for dogs getting stuck together, you will know trying to break them apart is dangerous. The dog's female and male anatomy do not allow removal of the penis before the end of the dog's third ejaculation. If you separate them forcefully, both animals would be wounded and harmed. Not only would intercourse would not come to its end, but you could serious rupture their sexual organs. The animals need to carry out their natural mating process, allowing them a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere.

It is common to hear the female issue sounds similar to crying. It is possible she will growl and bark. However, even though we may want to spare her any pain, trying to break them apart after getting stuck can cause the dogs even greater pain. It is most advisable not to boost their stress levels and let them separate from each other naturally.

Once the intercourse has ended, if the eggs have been fertilized and the dog becomes pregnant, it will be necessary to provide her with the best level of care. To help provide said care, we recommend the following articles:
